The not-so-good

It’s not exactly beginner-friendly. The docs are solid, but they assume you already know how Windows Installer works under the hood. I spent two days wrestling with conditions and properties just to make a simple “install for all users” option work. If you're used to drag-and-drop tools like Inno Setup, this feels like coding in assembly language.

Also, no GUI. Just command-line tools. I don’t mind that much now, but early on, it felt like building a car with only wrenches and no socket set. And yeah, it’s free, but the learning curve is real. If you’re doing one-off installs for a small team, maybe stick with Inno Setup.

Bottom line

If you’re serious about building reliable, repeatable Windows installers - especially with multiple dependencies - WiX Toolset is the way to go. It’s free, it’s open source, and it’s used by big players. Download it for Windows if you’re in development and want control over your install process. Not for casual use, but if you’re shipping software, it’s worth the effort.
