WordPress MU Domain Mapping

I’ve been managing a small WordPress network for a few years now, and one of the biggest headaches was letting users actually use their own domains. Like, “I want my blog at mycompany.com” - not just “yoursite.wordpress.net”. That’s where this plugin came in. I installed it manually, dropped the file in wp-content, followed the docs, and boom - suddenly I could map domains without touching DNS every time. Not bad for something that’s basically free.

The good stuff

What really saved me was how simple it made the admin side. As a super admin, I can go to Tools > Domain Mapping and see all the sites with their mapped domains. Add a new one? Just type in the domain, pick a primary one, and it’s done. No code changes, no messing with .htaccess. The interface is clean and low-friction. And hey, if you need to hook into it later, there are action hooks - so devs can extend it without breaking anything. That’s nice when you’re juggling plugins and don’t want to edit core files.

Also, it handles login redirects properly. If someone logs in on a mapped domain, they get sent back to the right place. No weird 404s or looped redirects. Small thing, but super useful when your clients start complaining about “the site not working” because they’re on the wrong URL.

The not-so-good

It’s definitely not for beginners. The install process isn’t automatic. You gotta copy the file yourself, read the instructions, and set up DNS records - A or CNAME - on your own. That’s fine if you’re technical, but if you’re running a network for non-techy clients, this might be too much. There’s no UI for setting up DNS, which means you’re still stuck in your hosting panel.

And yeah, it’s old-school. The last update was years ago, and the developer info is basically nowhere. It’s not exactly “supported”, but it still works. I’ve had zero issues since I started using it. But if you’re looking for something actively maintained, this isn’t it. Also, no real support forum or community around it - you’re on your own if something breaks.

Bottom line

If you’re running a WordPress MU or multisite network and need custom domain mapping, this plugin does the job without drama. It’s lightweight, stable, and gets the job done. And it’s free. So unless you’re terrified of manual installs or want a slick UI with built-in DNS tools, skip the alternatives and just use this. For developers and tech-savvy admins, it’s a solid choice. Just know it’s not going to hold your hand.
